Introduction

The Milimail project aims to develop under public licence (MPL version 1.1, GPL version 2.0 and LGPL version 2.1) extensions for the Mozilla's Thunderbird e-mail client. Each extension provides Thunderbird with an extra feature:

  • XSMTP protocol management module,
  • processing of message priority at envelope level,
  • limitation of message size.

Most of these features meet an initial requirement in a military context. They are also useful in a civilian and professional context to manage, for example, urgent messages and distribute them as rapidly as possible.

Milimail Project works with Mozilla Fondation in order to integrate most of these extensions in the core product.

Extensions in Mozilla framework

XSMTP protocol management

XSMTP is based on SMTP. It defines military extensions in MIME format:

  • to convey urgent, confidential or other military messages.
  • to be interoperable with the other standards, such as ACP127, P 772 (MMHS), etc.

Processing of message priority at envelope level

The objective is to produce an extension to manage the priority in the message envelope so that the e-mail relays can relay urgent messages in priority.

Limitation of message size This feature is correlated with the previous ones. The objective is to limit the size of urgent messages so that they can be conveyed as quickly as possible. In practice, the number of characters in the message body will be limited.

Licence

Milimail plugins will be produced under double public licence (MPL version 1.1, GPL version 2.0 and LGPL version 2.1).
